Understanding Anxiety Disorders in Children
Feeling anxious from time to time is normal—but for some children, anxiety becomes a daily struggle. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions in children.
Types of Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): persistent, excessive worry about everyday things
Social Anxiety Disorder: intense fear of social or performance situations
Separation Anxiety: extreme distress when away from caregivers
Phobias: irrational fears of specific things or situations
Signs to Look For
Frequent headaches or stomachaches with no medical cause
Avoidance of school or social events
Sleep difficulties or nightmares
Restlessness or irritability
Constant reassurance-seeking
Causes
Anxiety can stem from genetics, brain chemistry, temperament, or stressful life experiences. It often coexists with ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities.
How to Help
Therapy: CBT is especially effective for managing anxious thoughts and behaviors
Routine and predictability
Mindfulness or relaxation techniques
Medication (in more severe cases, under medical guidance)
Why Early Support Matters
Untreated anxiety can impact school, friendships, and family life. Early recognition and compassionate support can make a powerful difference.
